Why this exists
One good source, kept current
joshuatree.help has a single job: to be the clearest, most honest, most up-to-date place to understand the Joshua tree — what it is, why it’s in danger, and how serious that danger is right now.
Why that’s needed
The facts about this tree are scattered — split across agency PDFs, research papers, news from a single fire, and park pages that rarely change. Two different species get lumped together. And almost nowhere can you see the live picture: is it blooming, is it burning, is it quietly slipping away this year? A tree in trouble deserves better than information that’s out of date the moment it’s written.
What this tries to be
- Current. Where the truth changes — bloom, fire, decline — this pulls live data instead of freezing a snapshot. The point is to answer “how are the Joshua trees right now,” not just in general.
- Honest and sourced. Every claim traces back to a primary source — agencies, researchers, real observations. This is built by one programmer, not a scientist, so it shows its work and links you to check it.
- Clear. Accurate without being a wall of jargon. Someone who’s never heard the word “phenology” should still leave understanding what’s at stake.
- Non-commercial. No tracking, nothing for sale, no agenda beyond the tree. It hands its data back to the open science it borrows from rather than hoarding it.
Who’s behind it
joshuatree.help is a spare-time public good by a kid from the Mojave — kept up out of affection for a strange, slow, stubborn tree that raised a lot of us, and out of the sense that it’s wrong to have the skills to build this and not build it. It’s a companion to joshuatree.art: one made to be beautiful, this one made to be useful.
